The Battery East improvements opened in the mid-2010s as part of the San Francisco Bay Trail, which is a long-running regional trail project around the entire Bay Area, initiated in the late 1980s. It is scenic, removed from traffic, and gives you a calm approach to the bridge compared with the road options nearby. Expect some climbing, but the gradients are manageable. The way the bridge towers are slowly revealed as you move along the hillside is genuinely great.
